“Pinchas" *
Numbers 25:10 - 30:1

And the L-rd was a giving G-d

Who had lead His people out of the bondage of Egypt
and continued to abide with them

In morning sun and evening cloud

Gracious and forgiving

Revealing and leading

And this same Creator asked to be honored
with special sacrifices which he defined as clearly
as each new dawn

What was to be brought Him each day

And upon special occasions

Whether bull or lamb with no blemish

Crops from the earth

Or incense so sweet

Each was a gift from human hands
to be freely and graciously given

To the One who first gave us life

Renewed with each birth

Not so much a sacrifice as a gift of heart

Between two beings enraptured in love

* Son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron
